Obama's Newros Message to Iran
Obama's Newros Message to Iran
Dr. Asad abu sharkh
Al-Azhar University - Gaza
Obama's Newros message to Iran seems to be different from Bush's arrogant language of threats and accusations; no one can judge with confidence what course this new administration is expected to take, however Obama's new language with Iran may indicate that some new approach is in making in the U.S. foreign policy. Whether this is going to be a radical change or Just a cosmetic alteration remains to be seen. The question which some political analysts raise focuses on the motivation of such a seemingly conciliatory sugar coated language, is this part of a sweet tongue strategy reflecting the personality of Obama? Or is it a new approach dictated by the change in the world scene or the emergence of Iran as an undeniably super regional power that can not be ignored? Or is it because the U.S. needs probably -badly needs- Iran's role in the new Middle East particularly to help a U.S. more honorable and less costly withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Or is it part and parcel of its classic policy of the "stick and the carrot" i.e you start by temptation and if it fails go for intimidation.
Some pundits think that the emergence of Iran as a strong player in the area is the main factor that made the new administration think of trying to maneuver Iran into accepting some role under America's control and containment. The U.S. realizes that starting a new war in the area to tame and cow in Iran could cause a global catastrophe particularly to the U.S.A which had already experienced the war on Iraq with its dire consequences and repercussions at the human, political, economic and social levels.
This administration is aware that the Bush's Iraq war was not Just, Justified or justifiable, as Bush had fabricated and invented lies about illusive weapons of mass destruction, which transpired to be America's big lie, that made Bush admit that his war on Iraq was based on lies and that he himself was misguided and misled.
Obama knows that America's war an Iraq has egregiously backfired. Bush and his cabal wanted it to be a coup d'metre, but it rather proved to be a coup de grace that made the American Empire sink knee-deep in the Iraq quagmire causing the Bush administration to be totally helpless, hapless confused, blemished and zonked!
One may argue and rightly so – that the powerful Zionist lobby being encouraged and strongly pushed by Israel which is infuriated by what might probably be a new U.S policy will use all it can to subvert or even torpedo or pulverize such a policy as Israel wants to remain the only regional superpower in the Middle East in order to control the area and continue its Zionist enterprise based on hegemony, occupation, expansion, ethnic cleansing as well as the denial of the Palestinian rights.
Israel, a rogue state, does not abide by international law or implement U.N resolutions calling for ending its occupation of Palestinians territories or for the right of return and compensation for the Palestinian refugees, so the emergence of any power in the area can not be accepted by Israel which wants to keep its hegemony and its qualitative military edge in the Middle East.
Israel is expected to start a ruthless psychological warfare campaign against the new American administration to curb and kill in the bud this new approach.
Israel's campaign will still focus on Iran's nuclear capabilities to pressure the west into waging a war on it and if not impose strict sanctions that could paralyze life in that country.
Israel will make full use of its being the only strategic ally to America in the M.E to subvert any improvement in American Iranian relations.
Israel has already started to sabotage any change in U.S. policy henceforth the Zionist lobby managed to block the appointment of Obama's choice Charles freeman as head of the intelligence commission in the national security council.
Can Obama challenge the Zionist lobby? Will he open a new page with Iran starting by lifting the siege and compensating Iran for all the damage which U.S foreign policy caused to it? Will he put the American interests above all other interests including Israel's? Is he serious about his new approach towards Iran and henceforth all other countries friends or foes? Can he adopt a fair handed policy towards the Palestinian cause and redress the wrongs which various U.S. administrations committed against the Palestinian people and at least force Israel to abide by and implement all U.N resolutions on Palestine particularly resolution 194 which calls for Palestinian refugees right of return and compensation on which America was
a signatory.
Can Obama be a man of decision? Deciding and decisive? Will he prove the democrats if not better are at least different from the republicans or the difference one may hope for; between the democrats and the republicans is no better than the difference between the donkey and the mule symbolizing consecutively the democrats and the republicans.
To my mind the change in America's Policy if serious should be a step taken not talked abut.
This is a very good test for Obama's administration.
Will we be waiting long for such a change; let us wait and see
.
